Ask any guy who is around especially little kids a lot and he will tell you that getting jumped on the stomach is a regular thing!! Worse is their talent for heading you or kicking you in the nuts. Been there so many times. When she was doing the climbing frame scene I wondered how many times Chris carried on bravely as she innocently plonked her foot in his nuts! If she did she wasn't the only one. According to Jenny & Chris that also happened during their love scene.

A nice review i stumbled on while reading reviews for "fate of the furious" though i do hate how many critics take the angle that comic book movies are not "real acting." i recently saw manchester by the sea. wow, overrated. there is a definite correlation between what is considered good writing and good acting, as well as bad writing and bad acting.

Yes, true. Someone really skilled at their craft often makes it look deceptively easy. What Chris did in the First Avenger is an example.
This review set my hackles up to be honest. If this is an amateur review then fair enough but if it's a professional reviewer I think we should expect a little more knowledge or evidence of research. I enjoy telling the uninitiated all about some of Chris's lesser known performances but don't expect to have to do it for writers. This chap is writing as though Chris really has only done Marvel. Sigh.

I saw the movie today. Utterly charming, very heartwarming, sometimes funny, sometimes heart wrenching and quietly thoughtful with a bunch of beautiful smart performances. Even the smallest of roles is well acted.
Except for a plot quibble about the custody trial I had no issue with any of the plot points/mechanics. I guess I must be shaky cam inured because I barely noticed it and not unexpected since they filmed it all on location without sets, so some places are tight quarters. There's some truly lovely cinematography - the scene during the sunset is breathtaking as well as intimate.

After seeing McKenna in so many interviews she looks so much younger in the movie (made a year and a half ago) . It reminded me once again that kids grow FAST. She's truly remarkable in this and I can't imagine her not becoming a huge star - if she wants it. She has such vitality on screen and not only does she nail the emotional scenes but she's conveys so much intelligence, heart and wit even when Mary's being bratty. She's not playing some step-ford cutesy child - she's a completely fleshed out character. There's one reaction and line reading/payoff that's so priceless - Meryl Streep would be proud. The chemistry and relationship on screen between Frank & Mary is one the best and most natural I've seen on film even though they don't have a traditional parent/child relationship. Intellectually, emotionally and most rarely in film physically the characters relate to each other like real family who love one another even when they're driving each other crazy. Their relationships with the grandmother Evelyn are also really interesting. Chris and Lindsay Duncan do some truly great work together conveying this prickly relationship where much goes unsaid but it's all there in the performance. Even when they're adversaries they're also believably mother and son in the way they interact and share common history and even traits.
