I have some extremely important news everybody. After over a week of extremely complicated family life and being occupied with caring for a sick relative and six days after I originally had tickets to see it - today I am going to see Gifted for the first time. Let the wine flow and the dancers dance.

Presume you've seen it by now Bob? What did you think?
I took my OH to see it, he's a Marvel fan and does like Chris as an actor - he enjoyed it and it's not his type of film.

Finally!! Without mishap or adventure, I made it! OK. Whilst it's still fresh in my mind - although we did stop at ChaoBaby all you can eat Thai buffet afterwards so I've had time to think and discuss. I always look forward to Evans working his magic but hand on heart I did wonder if this was going to be 'my kind of film'. So hand still on heart I can say it exceeded my expectations. It was superb. I went with my brother in law (the one I told you about who takes the piss out of me ruthlessly for being an Evans fan) and he loved it too. I'll give you his take on it in a minute. By the way, it was a 15:45 showing so only about twenty odd (very odd!) people where there and we were two of only three males I saw. I didn't realise Chris was so popular with the ladies?! 🙄 I really loved how the story consistently kept the right side of over-sentimentality. Mckenna's character was actually a bit of a pain in the backside at times, which was perfect. Everything to say about her beyond phenomenal performance has been said so I'll just say you have to see it to believe it. The chemistry between her and Chris feels real because it IS real. The sunset scene was better than the trailers which reminds me. Very often when you see a trailer you find that in the film the scene is different because they've used a different take. To my mind it's often the better take that they use in the trailer. Not so here. A lot of the scenes you see in the trailers are much better in the actual film not only because obviously you see the full scene but also because I'm pretty sure with a few of them it was a different take. How great to find the trailer has NOT shown you all the best bits. Chris's character was so well done. It just hit the right note. He wasn't cloyingly wonderful but you felt what he was doing was wonderful. He spoke in the way people do speak to kids when they are close to them and comfortable with them. I loved the scene when he lost his temper with her and again I loved how that scene was resolved without going overboard with sentimentality. 'Can I have a piano?'. 'No!' His character was more complex than I thought it was going to be and more real. I'm glad that his looks were made 'ordinary good looking guy next door' ie weren't that important. I loved the extra added background that kept coming out in court because again it stopped it being a run of the mill child custody story. Lyndsay Duncan was fantastic and she made what could have been a caricature into a fascinating character. I get irritated by type cast Brits in American films but I could live with this one because she was an interesting character and not as straight forward as I thought she was going to be. It was something that ran through the film. On paper there is a lot that could go wrong with this film but each character had enough layers to stop that happening. The way Octavia Spencer interacted with Chris again was magic. Like so much of the script it wasn't so much what they said but the way they said it. Seeing Jenny and Chris together was thought provoking. They worked, didn't they? Totally believable. Mckenna's grin on the Saturday morning and the 'good morning, Miss Stevenson' was hilarious. Here's a thing. The hospital scene! I thought that was ridiculous. What a daft idea. As if! And YET it was the first of two times that I cried in the film so what does that tell you? About the scene not me. Highlights? Every scene with Chris and Mckenna. I mean that. Chris and Jenny in the bar. The sunset scene. Lyndsay Duncan in court. Octavia - 'think again, lady!'. Lyndsay Duncan's last scene. Mckenna's unleashed rage at Chris when he came for her. It was an incredible performance. It really was that wounded rage you feel when someone you really love has hurt you. It was the second time I cried. My brother in law said he loved the film. We go to the pictures together quite a lot but it's not the type of film we usually go to. Last one we saw was GoTG2. As a dad he adored the way Mckenna climbed all over Chris and sat on him, it was very real. He was bowled over by the sunset scene. He loved the scene on the bus and the broken nose and really loved the expression on the face of the little boy in class when Mckenna said his project had been the best. So is it his best film so far? We've had threads like this before - you know, if you could keep just one DVD, etc. I stand by what I've always said. His films and characters have all been so different that I genuinely love them for different reasons and so I can't choose a 'best'. It IS another film in which he proves he is one of the most versatile actors working today. To my mind THE most versatile but I'm biased. All the characters he's played are so different and Frank is another one to add to his list. It's definitely a member of the 'Chris's best films' group with the big boys. I have also always said that for me Chris is the best part of any film I've seen him in. Do you know what? I'm not going to say that about this film. He was as amazing as he always is. He was The Evans. But in this film all the performers were equal and they all fitted together so perfectly that without any one of them the others would have been the poorer for it, even Chris.

I'm so glad to read your review! It truly is a good film and that is not only because Chris is in it. You put everything so much more succinctly and beautifully than I can. I agree with your review and points. I'll leave it at that.

I was waiting for your review Bob and you did not disappoint. I agree on so many points!!
1. Not over sentimental which if easily could have done. It stood on the edge a few times but never went over.
2. The chemistry between all the characters just worked. It is rare a film to have all the casting so pure and workable but this one did it.
3. Lyndsay Duncan was amazing. I had only seen her in a couple other films but this one was phenomenal. I loved the scene between Frank and Evelyn as they discussed her latest husband punching cattle. It was a well needed break in the drama. Showed a different side to the mother/son dynamic and made these two character so much more real.
4. I think they really balanced the drama with the humor.
5. I agree about the hospital scene. I hate forced sentiment but DANG if this one didn't work against all odds.
I really think this is Chris' best work so far.

B. I'm so happy for you that you finally got to see it and that you love it as much as the rest of us. I agree with everything from your review except that they successfully portrayed Chris as just a normal good looking guy next door. They tried hard with the dirt and ill fitting cheap and often ugly clothes to de glamour every man him but then just threw up their hands and verbally acknowledged Frank as the local "damaged HOT guy" -

I'm so happy you finally were able to see it! I find when you can watch an actor in a film and forget who they are, that's a terrific performance. I agree, they all fit. They played off each other so well. Their interactions felt real and seamless. I agree with your brother in-law, Mckenna crawling and hanging all over him was so natural. You know that has regularly happened to Uncle Chris, so he was unaffected by it. Octavia is a gem and was the perfect voice of reason for Frank. He had her unspoken support and I loved that about her. Ms. Duncan, such grace in her performance. You could see the moment she could see the person her granddaughter was, because she was so much like her own daughter, and her finally getting that what was best for her, wasn't to be full on genius all the time, she needed to be a child, doing child-like things. I love this movie, and I hope everyone who wants to criticize Chris or just think of him as Cap, will see how versatile he is as an actor.

From the GMA interview posted a couple of months ago, Chris discusses McKenna using him like a jungle gym or just jumping on him and it seems like it very much came out of his personal experiences as an uncle and he discussed doing it with Webb.
