I love this. Do we all remember this time? Prague! I've been a couple of times and it's an amazing place. Czech beer is the best in the world (sorry, Germany!) It was a busy time too. Chris doing Snowpiercer and also having to hop across the Atlantic to go to friends' weddings as well as having to go to Brazil to promote the first Avengers film and then go to LA for the premiere and THEN back to Prague to finish off. He also started his Twitter account in Prague. He also had a birthday there. Anyway, happy days.

Good expansion this weekend. It should be around a $4.5m weekend on the way to $10.7m running total by the end of the weekend. $20m+ looks very possible and the biggest Fox Searchlight film since Oscar nominated Brooklyn a year and a half ago.

OK my Cevansies family, it's 0:35 in the land of King Arthur and I have to be up at 05:30 so I need to got to bed. I posted this sentimental thing on our twitter account and am overjoyed that if you look carefully you can see that Mckenna 'liked' it. Simple pleasures. Imagine if I got a 'like' from His Chrisness' one day. Dream on.

$20m+ on track "moderate start" because it was at 56 screens the first weekeng and the share pre screen was as high as the #1 movie that weekend, they should know it because are boxofficemojo, they have all the data the movie has yet to open in international markets and... we know a lot of people go to theaters to watch big movies, so when Gifted hits Amazon Itunes or VOD, etc... it will make even more money back. the studio is not just getting the budget's money back but gaining more. Which also helps the other films Chris will do, because they are independent too, so if Gifted does well, distributors for these films will be more interested.

Which also helps the other films Chris will do, because they are independent too, so if Gifted does well, distributors for these films will be more interested. It was a moderate compared to other indie films that opened similarly limited then went on to make $20m+. It's really showing it's legs right now. It's second Thur after going to 1000+ theaters was larger which is remarkable. And this last w/e, it's rare for a movie to expand as big as it did with 73% more theaters and have the theater avg barely drop. (as theater counts expand they reach more and more theaters in lower population centers with lower and lower ticket prices while the theaters it's already in experience drops) As it stands just in the domestic market it's a very good success for Fox Searchlight and will be their biggest film in over a year and a half (including their Oscar contenders from last year) - and bigger than most recent Independent studio releases, even several that were Oscar nominees and winners (which also boosts the box office). Dramas are a hard sell over seas unless they are Award contenders. Though those with a star are much easier to sell than those without and star power also helps to sell TV rights and Home Video O/S even if a movie doesn't get a theatrical release. So yes, this is a big win for Chris who's also shown how much he'll promote even a smaller film, which is so important for an Indie with the fraction of the marketing budget even a low budget horror film gets in wide spread release.

ah. a pity mendelson didn't do the review for forbes. he seemed to have liked it. i don't always agree with his opinions, and he does have his biases--that is, i think he does go out of his way to root for smaller, independent films, which is why he "thumbs-upped" movies like gods of egypt and pompeii, which were otherwise considered dreadful by most.
