Chris Evans is getting better with age and even better with success—more gracious, more engaged, more willing to use his voice. And just cooler. He didn’t even tell us to mind our own damn business when we pried about everything from which songs bring him back to what he would tell his 13-year-old self. The Knives Out star, Sudbury native, shameless dog lover, soon-to-be voice of Buzz Lightyear, and co-founder of the civic engagement website A Starting Point, took time out from shooting to gamely answer 10 of our most miscellaneous questions.
Favorite Book growing up?
Siddhartha by Herman Hesse. And it’s still my favorite book today. I read it for the first time in high school and up until that point, I had never read a book in one sitting. I just couldn’t put it down. No other book has made such an impact
Song that brings you back?
Anything by Alice in Chains. I was in high school during the height of the grunge era and we had some really amazing musicians. Kurt Cobain, Chris Cornell, Eddie Veder, Laye Staley, Jerry Cantrell. That type of music was a big part of my childhood. And obviously classic rock. Led Zeppelin will always be at the top of my list.
Baseball hat you wear the most?
Growing up on the East Coast, your hat becomes a part of your identity. I usually get very attached to one hat and wear it until it disintegrates. Right now I’m wearing a NASA hat most of the time. But I might be ready to switch it up.
Garbage food you love?
I’m a big candy guy. Skittles, Jelly Beans, gummy bears. I can put away BIG bags of candy without breaking a sweat. And if I’m gonna do fast food, it’s a toss up between Taco Bell and Burger King. However, McDonald’s fries are king. Their soft serve too.
Game day beer of choice?
Any IPA. Ballast Point is great. They have a grapefruit IPA that’s fantastic. Refreshing with a surprisingly high alcohol content. Gets the job done.
Movie you’ve seen the most times and why?
Maybe Tombstone. Any time it’s on TV, which is a LOT, I have to watch it. Every single scene is so good, and Val Kilmer is fucking phenomenal. If I had to write the entire script from memory, I think I could get at least 80% there.
Best game you ever watched?
I was lucky enough to be at the 2017 Super Bowl where the Patriots beat the Falcons. We were down 28-3 with only 2 minutes left in the 3rd quarter. It’s the greatest comeback in sports history, and it just so happened to occur during the Super Bowl. I lost my fucking mind.
How many hours of sleep do you need to function?
I usually try to get at least 6 hours, but I can probably function on 5. I’m also an amazing napper. Working on film sets for so many years, you get used to having small windows of time to steal cat naps. If you give me 5 minutes, I can probably get 4 minutes of good sleep out of it.
Advice you would give your unborn son?
Say yes to things. Take chances. Don’t be afraid to be vulnerable. Be kind even if it’s undeserved. Don’t take yourself too seriously. Fuck social media.
What would you say to your 13-year-old-self?
KEEP A JOURNAL! Pour your brain noise into it, and when you’re done writing, try to give the brain noise a rest.
