Oh yes, there aren't even 2,000 IMAX screens worldwide.
The U.S. has about 40,000 screens with only several hundred in IMAX.
On the topic, I saw a film recently on an 'ordinary screen' (screen 1 at homemcr.org/cinema/) and I was really struck what an amazingly clear, good quality picture it was. I checked and it was filmed with an Arri Alexa camera. Why doesn't everyone use them? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arri_Alexa
They're relatively new and might not have been as readily available before or the learning curve might be new. They were used for the airport scene in CW.

ALEXA 65 technology to be used by IMAX
IMAX has announced via VARIETY that it has entered into an agreement with ARRI to customize the ALEXA 65 system for use on IMAX productions.
We're looking forward to working with the IMAX team to create a specially customized camera, lens and workflow solution that not only does justice to the corporation's rich history of 15-perf 65 mm and 3D filmmaking, but carries it forward into a new era of even more spectacular large format image capture.
ARRI is very proud to announce this collaborative venture with IMAX, the recognized world leader in large format imaging technologies.
The ALEXA 65 was tested during the filming of CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER by directors Anthony and Joseph Russo, who were impressed with the results and plan to make use of the cameras through IMAX on CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR.
Separate from the IMAX agreement, ALEXA 65 is available exclusively through the ARRI Rental network. Offering a complete large-format solution for high-end theatrical motion pictures, the system comprises a 65 mm digital cinema camera, custom-designed prime and zoom lenses, and fast, efficient workflow tools. After outstanding feedback from demos and field testing, ALEXA 65 is now in use worldwide on its first major productions.
