When a clean-shaven Chris Evans as Captain America showed up in Vanity Fair’s Holiday issue Marvel portfolio, some die-hard fans were a bit confused. Wasn’t Cap supposed to have a beard in the next Avengers film? Well, fear not: the beard is indeed here in all its glory in the first Avengers: Infinity War trailer, which debuted bright and early on Wednesday’s Good Morning America.

The Marvel fan enthusiasm around Cap’s beard is more than just aesthetic preference. Since its debut in the Infinity War footage Marvel showed to fans at D23 and Comic-Con, fans have been wondering if Steve Rogers, on the run from the authorities after the events of Civil War, might adopt a new mantle. “I think him dropping that shield is him letting go of that identity," director Joe Russo told the Huffington Post of the end of the last film. "[It’s] him admitting that certainly the identity of Captain America was in conflict with the very personal choice that he was making.”

Bolstered by Avengers star Sebastian Stan—who recently signed a Captain America: The Winter Soldier poster for a young fan by adding a beard to Steve Rogers’s face, along with a speech bubble that reads “Argh, I’m Nomad”—fans have been wondering if we might see Steve Rogers adopt the disillusioned, post-Nixonian persona called “Nomad.”

But if we do see that version of Cap, who first showed up in the comics in 1974 (in the wake of the Nixon Watergate scandal), I’m not entirely certain he’ll stick around for long. Steve Rogers gets a bonafide hero moment in the new trailer, and the look of relief we get from Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch when he appears doesn’t exactly read as a “disillusioned hero” moment to me. As for that shield? Well, according to Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa (who knows a thing or two about Vibranium, the special metal Cap’s shield is made from), that won’t be a problem. “Get this man a shield,” he declares as Steve steps out of the shadows.

Captain America's 'Infinity War' Beard Was Most Popular Part of Trailer

If you had to guess, what would you think was the most buzzworthy moment from the Avengers: Infinity War trailer? Spider-Man's slick new costume? Thor meeting the Guardians of the Galaxy? Thanos' menacing speech?

It turns out it was Steve Rogers forgetting to bring his razor when he went into hiding after the events of 2016's Captain America: Civil War.

Captain America's beard generated more than 20,000 mentions on Twitter in the first seven hours of the trailer's release, according to social media research firm Fizziology. To put that number in perspective, that's more than many trailers generate as a whole during the same period (72 percent of trailers get fewer than 20,000 mentions during their first seven hours of life).

Infinity War is also the most talked-about initial trailer during the first seven hours that Fizziology has studied, topping Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Here's the breakdown of the top five talked-about moments from the Infinity War trailer:

i need to threadjack to tackle this very important topic. even though i'm 100% objective without any biases whatsoever, i actually am surprised to say that evans really does look better. this is because i do happen to think hemsworth has the better arms--evans just has the better shoulders and pecs and he's not as tall. i'm pleased to see that this completely objective article completely agrees with my completely objective conclusions based on hard, irrefutable data.
