'Avengers: Endgame': Is Chris Evans Really Done Playing Captain America?

Few people outside of Marvel know for sure exactly what Endgame means for our heroes in the fourth and final Avengers movie, but it’s reasonably certain this is the last time that Chris Evans will throw Captain America’s mighty shield.
Will fans say goodbye to Captain America in ‘Avengers: Endgame’?
In last year’s Avengers: Infinity War, we found out that Steve Rogers was one of the characters who was not reduced to ash after Thanos’ fateful snap. In fact, all of the other original Avengers, Iron Man, Black Widow, the Hulk, Thor, and Hawkeye, were still standing, though they were considerably worse for the wear.
However, that does not necessarily mean that everybody will make it through Endgame. Evans, himself, sounded a little ominous during a recent press conference. He said: “It’s the completion of the arc, that’s safe to say, right? This movie does provide kind of an ending to a lot of …”
But before Evans could complete that sentence, Avengers co-director Joe Russo came down on Evans like Thor’s hammer, cutting him off lest Evans reveal a big spoiler.
“There is a 22-film tapestry, you know,” Evans replied. “He’s been through so much.”
Why this might be the end of Captain America
Captain America’s exit from the Marvel Cinematic Universe makes sense thematically. There’s not much left for Rogers to stick around for. He saw two of his closest comrades vanish into thin air at the end of Infinity War. His beloved Peggy Carter, who once had her own Agent Carter series, passed away in Captain America: Civil War.
And besides all that, although he’s had fun with it, Evans may have had enough of the whole superhero gig. In addition to playing Captain America in three movies where he was the main character, he played the hero in all four Avengers movies. He also made brief cameos in other Marvel Movies, most memorably in Spider-Man: Homecoming with his public service announcements.
And let’s not forget that Evans has also previously played the Human Torch in the two Fantastic Four movies Fox made. Those costumes get to be a bit much after awhile.
In addition, the Hollywood Reporter, one of the industry’s major trade papers, headlined a recent story “Chris Evans to retire as Captain America after Avengers 4.’. That story quoted a New York Times interview in which Evans said, “You want to get off the train before they push you off.”

While the Captain America train might be grinding to a dramatic halt, Evans jumped aboard another train that moves at a pretty good clip: Broadway. He starred in a revival of the play Lobby Hero last year. He also has a number of movies on his schedule, including the murder mystery Knives Out, directed by Rian Johnson, who helmed The Last Jedi. So Evans is at least keeping company with people like himself who know giant franchises.
In his interview with the New York Times, Evans indicated he was ready to relax a bit. And relaxing isn’t something you can do for long when you play Captain America.
“I used to have thoughts of wanting to climb to the top of something, or wanting to be somebody,” he said. “But when you get the thing that you think you want and then you wake up and realize that you still have pockets of sadness, and that your struggle will reinvent itself, you stop chasing after those things and it’s liberating, because you realize that right here, right now, is exactly all I need.”
And since, he also told the Times: “When I think about the times that I’m happiest, it’s not on a movie set.” That seems to seal the deal with Marvel. But as the old saying goes, in the comic book world, no one stays dead accept Bruce Wayne’s parents.
