I thought that, as both Ifinite and Defending Jacob approach it was time to have a discussion thread about the books themselves.
Please be aware that this thread WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS so feel free to skip past this if you don't know what's happened, or if you haven't read the books yet.
Also, feel free to discuss The Devil All The Time, even though Chris is no longer attached to it.

Defending Jacob.
I read this in about a week - I really couldn't put it down. I'm reading it again now and picking up on little things I missed first time round.
I don't want to give away too much, despite my spoiler warning, but I loved the way the story was intertwined and the ending was quite a shock!
I think Laurie knew all along about Jacob, and I think Andy did too - but he refused to admit it, both to himself and to Laurie.

Would you mind if anyone like me broadened it to include any other books any of Chris's films have been based on? I think this is a great idea for a thread, btw.

I'm almost finished Defending Jacob again, it's still as gripping as the first time I read it. It's reinforced to me that, not only did Jacob kill Ben Rifkin, he killed Hope Connors too, was he experimenting with ways of killing? Ben was stabbed, Hope was strangled, or he stepped on her throat to crush her windpipe. Was he trying to find out a way of killing that satisfied him? Or did he just use whatever was available when the 'urge' to kill was too strong? It wasn't the first time he'd killed either - the missing dog, the awful noises Andy & Laurie heard were, I think, all Jacob too. He probably injured those kids when he was younger too. Ben wasn't the innocent kid he was made out to be though - he was a bully and seemed like a nasty kid - but then even nasty kids grow up to be good guys I guess. Did he deserve to die? No. But I think he picked on the wrong kid!
Laurie knew all along - she knew he was guilty but could never bring herself to admit it to Andy, and probably to herself too. She was scared that he would grow up to be a psychopath, a serial killer and she couldn't come to terms with it - and that's what drove her to the murder-suicide bid, making it look like an accident. Andy - I think he knew too but refused to admit it to himself, maybe he couldn't? Maybe he thought he had to be strong for Laurie and Jacob and to do that he couldn't admit to himself that Jacob was guilty - that's why he went after Patz, if he could throw suspicion on someone else then Jacob couldn't be found guilty. His career was over anyway once Jacob was arrested, he had nothing more to lose!
Was Billy Barber right to send the hitman to force the confession out of Patz and then kill him? Of course not, but I think that Billy thought Jacob would have been found guilty and, by doing this, Billy saved his grandson from a life in prison. Maybe he shouldn't have done it - Jacob would have gone to prison but other, innocent people would have lived. Laurie wouldn't be on trial for murder, and Andy wouldn't have to testify. I really do recommend reading this one - I know it'll give away the plot and the ending but, I figure that there'll be details in the TV series that will be changed slightly anyway, and I wonder how they're going to tell this story!

Thank you! I needed this post. ** SPOILERS** I imagined Chris as Andrew Barber while reading the book(So I didn't want to Jacob to be guilty of murder) but anyway, I thought Jacob was surely guilty for Hope's murder but I'm still confused about Ben's murder If Jacob was involved in this murder then he was not alone I think Because Jacob had so little blood on him and importantly Ben was tougher than him(Please tell me if I'm missing out something here). I can't wait to watch the series now!!

I'm not sure about that either, I think Jacob probably was guilty of Ben's murder, but not sure how there was so little blood. Unless there's something that's missing about the way Ben was killed.
There's still one thing that bugs me about this - and probably will until I see it next year. In the book Andy Barber is 51 years old, He's had 20+ years experience as an ADA, there's plenty of references in the book about his age & experience. However from what BTS photos we've seen so far, there's no way that Andy LOOKS over 50! Hell, he doesn't really look over 35!
