At the end of 2016, we naively hoped 2017 would be better. Instead, 2017 turned out to be so bad that we're basically dreading 2018. Because if there's one thing we learned this year, it's that no matter how awful things get, they can still get worse.

And yet.

The other big lesson we got this year was that even at the worst of times, there's always gonna be stuff to love, and still more stuff to look forward to loving.

So, sure, 2018 is probably gonna suck. But it won't be all bad, and we know that because there are at least 27 things we expect to be freakin' awesome over the next 12 months.

In no particular order:

1. Cap's beard in Avengers: Infinity War

Yes, we already got a glimpse of it in the trailer. But imagine how much better it'll look in action: rippling as Cap flies through the air to punch a bad guy, rustling as Cap strokes it thoughtfully, standing stiffly at attention while Cap delivers an inspirational speech. Honestly, Cap's beard might already be our new favorite Avenger.

We haven’t seen too much of a preview of the return of Sebastian Stan as the Winter Soldier in ‘Avengers: Infinity War,’ but Anthony Russo is making it sounds like he is going to be getting ARMed for battle. We know that once Bucky Barnes was turned into an elite assassin one of the upgrades he received was a robotic arm that was destroyed by Iron Man during the closing fight scene for ‘Captain America: Civil War‘.

While it is unclear if Bucky’s condition will be touched upon in ‘Black Panther‘ or not, we’ve gotten a strong tease that not only will his arm be rebuilt, but it’ll be even better than before!

The answer came during a brief fan Q&A where Anthony Russo weighed in on the missing appendage by stating:

“For everyone who’s seen Captain America: Civil War, they know Bucky was taken in by T’Challa in Wakanda. I think that you know, we catch back up with him after he’s been there for a while, and if there’s an influence on his arm, it may perhaps have to do with that country that he’s been spending time in.”

It is unclear if this means that the arm will be stronger, have newly built in technology, or possibly be made out of vibranium like Captain America’s shield and Black Panther’s new armor.

If this ends up being made out of the rare material, it would give the Winter Soldier a huge upgrade and absolutely be helpful when battling against the invading army that Thanos is bringing with him.

Chris Evans isn't "exactly Nomad" in Avengers: Infinity War, says director Joe Russo

The future of Steve Rogers explored.

At the end of Captain America: Civil War, Chris Evans's Cap went rogue with his buddy Bucky Barnes – leaving his iconic shield behind.

Since then there have been theories and hints suggesting that after laying down the Captain America mantel, Steve Rogers would assume the identity 'Nomad' in Avengers: Infinity War. Most recently this was hinted at by Evans himself who signed a fan's shield and included the words 'Cap' and 'Nomad'.

But now Avengers: Infinity War co-director Joe Russo, talking to Fantasy Focus Football (via Flickering Myth) has offered a bit of clarity on the situation. Is Steve Rogers going to become Nomad? Not exactly.

"Our approach to [Steve Rogers] was to deconstruct him, to take him in a different direction," Russo said.

"Obviously you can't deal with a character called Captain America without dealing with the thematics behind that, so we wanted a relevancy to it and we wanted to put him in a position where he was questioning the chain of command.

"You'll see in these Avengers films, he's on a very specific journey as a character. Some people have suspected that he may be Nomad heading into Avengers 3 and I wouldn't say that he is exactly Nomad, but he is the spirit of that character."

In the comics, Nomad is an identity taken on by Rogers when he becomes disillusioned by the US government so he can still carry on doing heroic deeds without affiliating himself specifically to the US, though he eventually goes back to being Captain America again.

It remains to be seen what the fate of Rogers is, but we reckon hardly anyone is safe after a released synopsis called the movie "the deadliest showdown of all time". Eek!

Avengers: Infinity War will hit cinemas on May 4, 2018, with the untitled sequel following in 2019.
