Thanksgiving 2019: Lionsgate To Release MRC’s Rian Johnson Murder Mystery ‘Knives Out’ With Daniel Craig & Killer Cast
EXCLUSIVE: Lionsgate is set to partner with MRC and distribute worldwide Knives Out, the contemporary murder mystery that Looper and Star Wars: The Last Jedi helmer Rian Johnson wrote and is directing. Daniel Craig stars as a detective trying to solve a murder and the killer ensemble cast includes Chris Evans, Michael Shannon, Lakeith Stanfield, Jamie Lee Curtis, Toni Collette, Ana de Armas, Christopher Plummer, Katherine Langford and Don Johnson.
Lionsgate has dated the film for nationwide release on November 27, 2019 for the Thanksgiving holiday corridor.
The film became possible when director Danny Boyle exited James Bond 25. While that film regrouped — Cary Fukunaga is directing it — Craig suddenly had an open slot, and Johnson and his producing partner Ram Bergman took full advantage with an Agatha Christie-style murder mystery that Johnson wrote and was able to squeeze in before he and Bergman drill down on a new trilogy in the Star Wars universe. It was shopped at Toronto by CAA Media Finance and FilmNation, and MRC stepped up and acquired all rights and agreed to finance the picture.
Knives Out becomes a big title for Lionsgate, which already had the next iteration of Hellboy, John Wick: Chapter 3, and the Roland Emmerich-directed WWII action adventure Midway.
Lionsgate and MRC confirmed the deal, and, no mystery here, everyone is excited.
Said Johnson and Bergman: “MRC put their trust in us when they first partnered with us on this film and Lionsgate truly champions and empowers the artist to tell the story they want to tell so we couldn’t be in better hands.”
Said Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chairman Joe Drake: “Knives Out redefines the detective movie genre in a cool and original way With a superstar filmmaker, an amazing ensemble cast and the perfect partner in MRC, we can hardly wait to bring this big, crowd-pleasing property to a global audience next Thanksgiving.”
Said MRC co-presidents of film Brye Adler and Jonathan Golfman: “The entire Lionsgate team was incredibly impressive and could not have been more passionate about the project. We’re looking forward to working together to help bring Rian’s original and highly entertaining movie to the world.”

Star-studded “Knives Out” begins production at Easton’s Borderland State Park The murder mystery will star Daniel Craig, of James Bond fame, alongside Chris Evans, LaKeith Stanfield, and Jamie Lee Curtis. Production began in Easton this week.
EASTON — James Bond and Captain America are making a movie in Easton.
Film crews for “Knives Out,” an upcoming murder mystery starring Daniel Craig (Bond) and Chris Evans (Captain America), began production Thursday at Borderland State Park.
Rows of trailers assembled near the nature reserve’s visitor center this week as park rangers restricted access to the park’s 20-room mansion, constructed by a branch of the Ames family in 1910 and acquired by the state in 1971.
The only film permit currently active at Borderland State Park belongs to Benedict White, LLC, according to the state’s Department of Conservation and Recreation, who listed Greg Chiodo as the production company’s contact person.
Chiodo confirmed to The Enterprise that the permitted crews were working on “Knives Out.”
The permit authorizes the production company to work through Friday, December 21.
According to the online database IMDb, “Knives Out” also stars Jamie Lee Curtis, well-known for her early-career stretch of horror film roles that earned her the “scream queen” moniker. A younger generation of moviegoers might remember Curtis from her role reversal with Lindsay Lohan in 2003′s “Freaky Friday.”
LaKeith Stanfield also features in the film, according to IMDb. Stanfield starred in “Get Out” and “Sorry to Bother You” after attracting international attention for his role in the television series “Atlanta.”
On Thursday, a ring of trucks and trailers could be seen surrounding Borderland State Park’s historic mansion, which has become a popular destination for directors filming in the Boston area.
Other movies recently filmed at the home include the 2016 reboot of “Ghostbusters” and Martin Scorsese’s “Shutter Island.”
But “Knives Out” isn’t the only film being produced in the Brockton area these days. Filming for the Netflix original “Wonderland” starring Mark Wahlberg, Alan Arkin, and the rapper Post Malone began at a former dog racing track in Raynham last week.
