In an enduring October tradition, local movie fans will get an early look at some of the season’s buzziest movies at the Chicago International Film Festival, which this year has landed titles starring Jamie Foxx, Kristen Stewart, Anthony Hopkins and (twice) Scarlett Johansson.
The festival returns to its usual home, AMC River East 21, for its 55th edition Oct. 16-27. All the titles and screening times will be announced Sept. 18, but a few offerings were revealed Wednesday, including (in alphabetical order):
“The Aeronauts,” director Tom Harper’s follow-up to “Wild Rose,” about a pilot (Felicity Jones) and a meteorologist (Eddie Redmayne) taking an experimental balloon voyage in 1862.
“Harriet,” starring Cynthia Erivo as Underground Railroad heroine Harriet Tubman, directed by Kasi Lemmons (“Eve’s Bayou”).
“A Hidden Life,” the latest from deep-thinking director Terrence Malick, concerns an Austrian farmer threatened with execution for refusing to fight for the Nazis.
“Honey Boy,” starring Shia LaBeouf as the father of a child star in an autobiographical drama he wrote himself. Commercial and music video pro Alma Har’el directs.
“Jojo Rabbit,” starring Scarlett Johansson as a German mom hiding a Jewish girl in her attic. Taika Waititi (“Thor: Ragnarok”) directs this satire, much talked about at the ongoing Toronto festival, and co-stars as her son’s imaginary friend, a dimwitted Adolf Hitler.
“Just Mercy,” with Michael B. Jordan as real-life Alabama lawyer Bryan Stevenson attempting to rescue an innocent man (Jamie Foxx) from death row. Destin Daniel Cretton (“The Glass Castle” directs.
“Knives Out,” an Agatha Christie-style whodunit from writer-director Rian Johnson (“Looper,” “The Last Jedi”). The all-star cast includes Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Shannon, Don Johnson, Toni Collette, LaKeith Stanfield, Katherine Langford, Jaeden Martell and Christopher Plummer. “Knives Out” will be the featured attraction at the mid-festival Centerpiece Gala.
“Marriage Story,” Johansson again, playing a woman parting ways with her husband (Adam Driver) in the latest from director Noah Baumbach (“Mistress America”).
“Ordinary Love,” with Lesley Manville (“Phantom Thread”) as a woman dealing with a dire diagnosis and Liam Neeson as her supporting husband. Lisa Barros D’Sa and Glenn Leyburn direct.
“The Report,” about a staffer (Adam Driver) for Sen. Dianne Feinstein (Annette Bening) investigating CIA torture after 9/11. “Contagion” screenwriter Scott Z. Burns directs.
“Seberg,” featuring Kristen Stewart as French New Wave actress Jean Seberg, whose political activity drew FBI notice. From “Una” director Benedict Andrews.
“The Truth (La Vérité),” the first non-Japanese outing for master filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda, starring Catherine Deneuve as a movie star and Juliette Binoche as her screenwriter daughter.
“The Two Popes,” starring Anthony Hopkins as Pope Benedict, faced with a retirement request from a discontented cardinal (Jonathan Pryce). Fernando Meirelles (“The Constant Gardener”) directs.
