i did not heed my own advice and accidentally engaged with some people who thought endgame ruined steve's character (not directly; i merely answered someone in the thread by stating i thought they were simply very vocal, and in the thread i poked my fat nose into, they were implying they were the "silent" majority--which seems odd, as they are anything but silent. nevertheless). wow, what a rabbit hole that is!
i feel bad for that crowd sort of. no different than the people who howl about how rian johnson ruined star wars, imho. sorry if any of you are lurking.
answering my own question, upstream... no, me personally, i don't think endgame ruined steve's character. i love the character, but the criticism that he doesn't really change from film to film is more or less true, and part of the reason why i imagine that chris might have wanted to spread his wings a little. i don't "agree" with the idea, necessarily, but i can see how the writers wanted to move him from constantly selfless to enlightened selfishness (i.e., it's okay for him to live a little). thus even in the "worse case" scenario, no, i don't think his character is damaged. but the naysayers seem obsessed that the way MM trolled about steve is the canonical version. the thing is, it's true that one can picture the remainder of steve's life playing out however one wishes. if one wishes to choose the scenario where he sits back and does nothing, no one can stop anyone from interpreting it that way. *shrug*
narratively, as well, the video is "correct." with nat and tony's death, killing steve too would have been too much of a bummer ending. thus, giving him a happy ending was the right "choice." there were only so many ways of doing it, but at the end of the day, being with peggy was the best "choice," or the choice for which there was the most background. sharon wouldn't have worked for aforementioned reasons (and indeed, as discussed, in earlier drafts, it seems like they tried it), and no, not even bucky, though certainly that would have been an ending that would have caught huge numbers of viewers completely off guard.

That was a really interesting video, bethnor. After watching it the version that most appeals to me is that in the alternative timeline the other Cap still gets thawed and everything happens as it did in the films with him as an aged extra in the background. He'd have to actively stop them from finding his frozen body in order to avoid that. He'd be too old to be immediately recognisable to anyone in the modern world. There are still enormous holes like what happened in the new timeline to the guy who originally was going to marry Peggy? To what point in time exactly did he return? Could he/should he have stopped Bucky falling off the train? Actually, I suppose if he'd gone back before the 'big freeze' then he would have stopped a Captain America from being around in the modern world to fight the aliens unless he crashed the plane a second time and made the whole time trip pointless. There must have been two Steve Rogers and one Captain America. Well, it works for me and thats the main thing.

Full Saturn Award Nominee List AEG nominated in 14 categories - or almost every category it could be nominated in. Chris & RDJ both nominated for Lead Actor in a Film and Scarlett, Karen Gillan, Josh Brolin & Renner in the supporting categories (surprised Hemsworth didn't get one) thesaturnawards.com/images/saturn-award-nominations.pdf

probably an oversight on their part. seriously, does mel gibson really need a nom ? that said, it's also true that technically, it wasn't his last bow.
if they wanted to make a statement, they would give it to chris. i am pretty sure they will give it to downey, if for no other reason than sentimental value. but in all likelihood disney will push RDJ for an oscar nom, which i think there is a good chance he will get (a nom for best supporting actor--he won't win).

it's interested to see how certain people are reacting to these tidbits. the idea that they toyed with throwing cap's head at his feet should really underscore the MM are trolling people. and having chris ask those questions is too calculated by half--they are deliberately poking that hornet's nest.
